BOOK REVIEW: THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F***

I genuinely enjoyed reading this book. While the title initially seems provocative, I assure you that the book's content is both powerful and profoundly insightful, offering a realistic perspective on life. This book's engaging narrative made it impossible for me to put it down. Let's say I was simply engrossed, not my fault though. Mark Manson indeed was not subtle, but rather brutally honest, which I believe that this approach was his way of establishing a genuine connection with his readers, making his message more relatable and authentic. This book explains and teaches us the type of fxcks to give. In other words, it teaches us which battles to pick and why you shouldn't care about everything, instead focusing on the things that align with our personal values.

''Not giving a fxxk does not mean being indifferent, it means being comfortable with being different. For example, when you give too many fxxks about everything and everyone, you will feel that you're perpetually entitled to be comfortable and happy at all times''. - Mark Manson

Source
Mark Manson addresses the issue of procrastination, advocating for the simple yet effective principle of '' Do something'' over waiting for motivation. He suggests that even a small commitment of just 5 minutes can be enough to build momentum, and before you know it, the task will be underway. To overcome procrastination, he recommends adopting a mindset of ''caring less'' about perfection and ''starting to do'' as taking action inevitably leads to results.

He stressed the significance of learning to say no, illustrating his point with the example of Russian culture, whose bluntness can sometimes be misinterpreted  by westerners. I found this particular observation amusing , having had the opportunity to live in Russia for several years and witnessing first hand the cultural difference he described.

Here are some key takeaways I gleaned from this book

Responsibility: Take responsibility for everything that occurs in your life, regardless of who's at fault.

Uncertainty: The acknowledgment of your ignorance and the cultivation of constant doubt in your own beliefs.

Failure: The willingness to discover your flaws and mistakes so that they may be improved upon.

Rejection: The ability to both say and hear no, thus clearly defining what you will and will not accept in your life.

Conclusion, this book empowers us to take control of our lives without being held back by feelings of guilt, fear, or uncertainty. This book will help you think a little bit more clearly about what you're choosing to find important in life and what you're choosing to find unimportant. This book will turn your pain into a tool, your trauma into power, and your problems into slightly better problems.

Have you read this book before? What are your thoughts on this book?

This is a great self-improvement book, I'd rate it a solid 9/10

  13. This seems like a great book, honestly. I heard about it but I thought it might be overhyped, so I never purchased it. I was also a bit put off by the title, as I'm not used to seeing the f**k word in print. That all being said, I like how the message is to pick our battles. That's something I'm always saying. You cannot win in everything. You cannot argue about everything. You got to pick your battles. For me, it's a matter of figuring out what you deeply care about and trying to find a balance in our lives between what we can do and what we would like to.
Good example with the Russians. Even though I'm of a Slavic ethnicity myself, the bluntness of Russian people initially took me by surprise. It took me a minute to get used to it. With time, I grew to rather enjoy their extreme honestly. I think they make for great friends, too. With them, you always know where you stand. Being blunt saves time for everyone involved!

    Thanks for this review!
The title of the book is very catchy! And apparently so is its content! And it makes you realise that it's okay not to always win your battles, and I have to train myself to do that, because it's hard for me to accept that! Have a nice weekend!
